Book Club - Matilda

This month’s book for Bon’s Book Club was Matilda by Roald Dahl. Even though I am sure majority of your have either read this book or seen the movie at some point in your life, here is the description of the book from Amazon:

“Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a kid-hating terror of a headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!”

This book is just adorable. It’s such an easy read too, which I really love.  It’s nice to get lost in the silliness once in a while.

One thing that surprised me though, was that the book was not as I remembered it.  I feel like it actually teaches children really bad things!  I mean, when Matilda gets mad at her parents (and rightly so) she decides to punish them by using trickery.  What kind of lesson is that teaching children?

Yes, the book does have a lot of outrageous imagery such as Miss Trunchbull swinging children by their pigtails and throwing them across the yard or holding them up by their ears so much that they stretch, but I wonder if young children realize this is not real? The book information suggests

Overall I’m glad I took the time to read this book again. It probably took maybe a few hours, so it wasn’t much. I love Roald Dahl books.  If you haven’t read the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) I would suggest it too!
Next up for Bon’s Book Club is In Cold Blood by Truman Capote.  I am really looking forward to reading this book as well. If you haven’t noticed, I do tend to like crime and mystery type books, so this is right up my alley. I vaguely remember the movie, but I definitely can’t remember the main points.

Have you read Matilda? What are your thoughts?

Starbox Review - June

Starbox time!

I'm sorry I've been so MIA lately guys....I have soooo much going on.  I hope to explain more soon!

So lets get on with the review!

I am still iffy on this box. Sometimes I love it and sometimes I just don’t.  I can’t decide if it is worth it to me or not.

If you don’t remember, Starbox is a monthly beauty box that is $15 a month (plus a few dollars S&H) and comes with 3-4 FULL SIZED products each time.  No tiny lotion samples!
The website says the makeup line is comparable to MAC, Chanel, Sephora and other department store lines.  It also says that the value of each monthly box ranges from $35.00 to $99.00.

The theme of this box is “Royals” which I think is cute.  It’s a very popular idea for right now!

Here it is….the June Starbox!

           1)     Starlooks Longwear Lipstick in “Limitless” -  .12 oz  (FULL SIZE)
At I’m sorry, but this color is terrible. I can’t even say anything else about it.  I do like their longwear lipsticks, but this is not one that will be going anywhere near my lips! Yes, it kind of fits the theme, but that does nothing for me.
Full Size: $13.00 My Value: $13.00

           2)    Starlooks Longwear Eyeliner Pot in “Sun”– .08 oz. (FULL SIZE)
I really don’t like the color of this either.  Bummer. I honestly can’t imagine this
bright yellow gold liner looks good on very many people at all.  Yes, it’s nice that it
doubles as a shadow and a liner, but it’s just no good to me. Again, it goes with the
theme, but I don’t like it.
Full Size: $15.00 My Value: $15.00

           3)    Starlooks Cream Blush in “Fallen Angel”  – .21 oz. (FULL SIZE)
Now this is something I really like. I mean, the color is gorgeous!  I am not one for cream blushes really, but this one is just too pretty to not give it a try! I can’t wait to play with it!
Full Size: $17.00 My Value: $17.00

Final Cost: $17.58
Final Value: $45.00

I like the products in the box…..but the colors are just terrible.  So it’s a win/lose for me.  Bummer.   I really do love the cream blush though, so at least it’s not a wash!

I feel like the company is losing a little momentum.  They used to really have great boxes and now they are running out of original products to give, they are just the same thing all the time.  I guess if you haven’t had this box for a while though like me, it would probably be pretty awesome!

What do you think?

If you’d like to try Starbox you can sign up here!

(Also, I swear I’m not a review blog….I just like sharing these fun things! I have not been compensated for this review.)

Ipsy Review - June (and PLBS Link-Up)

Hello Ipsy!

I had an overnight work trip last week (to Universal Studios in LA…woo hoo!) so I got this a little late, but it’s still a welcome piece of mail!

My favorite time of the month….I just love getting this bag in the mail! As I’ve always said, this is the best bag out there, especially for such a low price.  If you are looking to start a beauty subscription, I would definitely try Ipsy first.

Also, it’s only $10 a month….how can you not go for it?

The theme of this month’s bag is “Fresh Pics.”

So here it is….the June Ipsy bag!

           1)     Be A Bombshell Mascara in “Lash Out” - .25 oz. (FULL SIZE)
Ooo I like this! A full sized mascara?  I am always up for trying new mascaras since I have yet to find one I absolutely love. This brand seems to be pretty popular with beauty bags, I hope that it is decent.
Full Size: $15.00 My Value: $15.00

           2)    DermaDoctor Dermatologically Defining BB Cream – .3 oz.
Ok seriously, how many letters are we going to use in the alphabet for these kinds of
creams? I find it really annoying. BB wasn’t good enough, so they did CC. Now there is a
DD? Ugh. I feel like none of these do the miraculous things they claim to do!
Full Size: $38.00 for 1.35 oz. My Value: $8.40

           3)    Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray – 1.52 oz.
First of all, this smells amazing! Second, is this a brand from the singer?  Or just someone
with the same name?? I wish It would have worked as well. It almost weighed down the
natural wave I had, making it look pretty terrible after a few hours.  I am going to give it one
more try, this time with a different finishing hairspray.  Fingers crossed!
Full Size: $8.79 for 4.2 oz. My Value: $3.18

4)   Nicka K New York Shimmer Eyeliner in “Green” – .1 oz. (FULL SIZE)
Well, this is a really pretty color.  I hope I get the guts to wear it sometime!  It’s a pretty cheap product, so I’m not sure how well it will actually work.  This is about the highest I’d pay for a liner like this that I would only wear once in a blue moon.
Full Size: $4.99 My Value: $4.99

       5)  NYX Butter Gloss in “Éclair” – .27 oz. (FULL SIZE)
You guys, I seriously love these glosses right now!  I currently have 3 of them in my purse. They smell great and are sooooo soft on my lips. I can’t get enough of them.  They are a great price too!  That being said….this color makes me sad. It’s just not me.  It’s a very light baby pink and just looks ridiculous on me.   Oh well!
Full Size: $5.00 My Value: $5.00

Final Cost: $10.00
Final Value: $36.57

This is a pretty decent bag I’d say.  The big ticket winner to me this time is the mascara.  It’s worth over the price of the bag alone.  I wish the butter gloss was in a different color, but at least one of my friends will get to enjoy it!

What are your thoughts?

If you’d like to give it a try you can sign up here!

(As always, I swear I’m not a review blog….I just like sharing these things in hopes that other people will get to have the same fun that I do!  I am not compensated in any way.)

Also, its already Pretty Little Beauty Swap Link up time!!!

Unfortunately I didn't have a partner this month (she never ever answered my emails....boo).  But that doesn't mean I don't want to see the awesome things you all got!

Bridemaids Dresses

One of the biggest things (other than shoes) that has given me headache about the wedding planning is the bridesmaids dresses.  I wanted to get them figured out as quickly as I could, because what I found would really dictate exactly what color “green” we would be using for everything else.

I really wanted to make sure the dresses were a decent price for the girls.  I know they all have a lot going on and I was hoping to keep the dress under $100 or at least $150.  Turns out the joke was on me.  Do you know how hard it is to find a decent looking dress in the color you want for under that price?!?!  It’s ridiculous.

I would go into store after store and see racks of 300 gowns….only 5 of them being under $185.  I mean are you serious?  Since when did standing next to one of your closest friends on her big day become so stinkin expensive??

I looked everywhere. I went to a ton of bridal shops, scoured the internet and even checked out some prom dresses in department stores.  I found nothing in the color I wanted for the price I wanted. I was bummed.  So I kind of gave up.

I found a website that sells dresses that seemed to be a decent price called jjshouse.com.  I sent an email to the girls asking me to send their top favorite styles and which color they prefer clover or sage.

Sage
Clover
Now let me point out, neither of those colors were what I was wanting or imagining, but I had kind of given up at this point. I wanted the girls to be happy and I wanted the dress to be a decent price, so I tried to just let it go.

We finally ended up getting this exact dress:

Here
It’s not a terrible dress at all.  But it’s definitely not what I imagined.  It’s a lot brighter than I personally wanted for my wedding and I spent a lot of time trying to convince myself that I was happy with the choice. Clearly, this was a mistake.

When the dresses arrived I was definitely not happy.  I loved the style (still do) but the color was just ugh.  It didn’t even match what was online.  It was more of a bright olive green and not attractive. I kind of hated it.  One of the dresses even had a needle stuck in it. A needle! Again, I was still trying to convince myself that I liked them.  My bridesmaids, being the awesome women that they are tried to help convince me too, even if it meant them wearing an ugly dress.

Yes, its sideways. But you get the point.
Finally my brain clicked and I decided I didn’t want the dresses.  It wasn’t what I imagined and they weren’t making me happy.  The only problem was, I wasn’t sure we could return them and I wasn’t sure we’d find anything else.

That weekend was my LA trip.  Two of the girls and my mom set an appointment at David’s bridal and we scoured the store.  I still didn’t love the green color that they offered, but I thought it was much better than what we had. They only problem was, none of the dresses were very flattering. We finally found one that was ok, but again it wasn’t the style that I was looking for.  I was going to have to settle again.  I wanted a long dress for everyone because I didn’t want different dress lengths when they were all standing together, I knew it would bug me. Also, if they bought this dress they’d have to all buy matching shoes too!  More expenses….ugh.

We left the store with the thought of purchasing those dresses once we confirmed we could return the others (lots of emails back and forth plus $70 of shipping later, we did).

On Sunday, we went shopping at a mall in LA.  The first store we pulled up to was Macy’s.  Problem was, even though the store was open, that particular door we went to was still locked. An associate tried to come and let us in, but she had to call someone else for help.  Finally, we gave up and walked over to Nordstrom’s which was a little bit further down the mall.  Best thing that could ever have happened!

Once entering the mall, we passed by H&M.  Along the wall by the store display window a long light pink chiffon dress caught my eye.  I walked over to it and exclaimed “See, I wish there was a dress like this in my color. It would be perfect.” As I got closer I noticed something.   Directly behind the dress tucked was back in there was this:

Here
OMG you guys!  It was the dress I was imagining the entire time!  What’s more, it was only $60!  I completely freaked, I was so excited.   I grabbed every single one off of the rack and we ran to the dressing room to try them on.  It was perfect.  I bought one for each of the girls. The only thing we need to find now is an ivory belt, obviously the black is too much.

That was about three weeks ago…. guess what happened this weekend?

The dresses went on sale!

My bridesmaid dresses are now only $35.  I can’t believe it!

After all of that hassle, I got more than I could have ever imagined I wanted.   The perfect color, the perfect style for the perfect (ok even better than perfect??!) price!

What do you think??

Currently

Whoops….I have been meaning to do one of these posts for awhile. I got caught up in everything I am ‘currently” doing though.  I can’t believe the last one I wrote was in March!

C

As I mentioned the other day, C’s team is kicking butt!  Right now, they have won 12 games and lost none, which ties them for a league record.  Only one other team in history has started with that great of a record.  I’m writing this a little early, but on Saturday they played the worst team in the league (San Antonio)… I will let you know if they win or not. If they do, they will hold the title of the team with the best start ever!

He's #6 on the end :)
The team has already clinched their division, which is incredible.  Helps me too, because now I know I for sure have to plan on a home playoff game the weekend of August 2nd!  It’s no fun having the few weeks before our wedding up in the air like that.  I mean, if they end up playing in the Arena Bowl again (fingers crossed) it will be just two weeks before we get married!  I mean, it’s possible I would have to plan a trip to some other unknown city for the game.  Eeewww!

Books
Last update I gave you I was reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and Insurgent by Veronica Roth. Well, by now I’ve obviously finished reading both.  In fact, I finished all three of the Divergent books by Veronica Roth.  You can read my review here. As for my thoughts on Night Circus, you can find them here.
After finishing those up, I moved on to our next book club read, The Light Bewtween Oceans by M.L. Steadman. I guess that book was decent.  I wouldn’t say it was my favorite, but I wouldn’t say I hated it either.  I am glad I took the time to read it though, because it wouldn’t have made it anywhere near the top of my “personal” reading list. My review is here.

Currently I am reading reading
Matilda by Roald Dahl and Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (the same author as Gone Girl). I knew Matilda would be a pretty easy read, so I thought I’d start another book at the same time.  I was right, I am almost finished with it in just a week!  It’s amazing how different it is to read the book as an adult.  I feel like it almost teaches kids some bad lessons! As for Dark Places I am only about 15% into it.  As best I can tell….it is very Dark.  I’m curious to see where it goes from here though!

TV

Hello……its Bachelorette time!  As I’ve always said, I can’t get enough of this show. I know its cheesy, lame and way over the top, but it’s my personal train wreck that I can’t look away from.  I am not really an Andi fan either, but alas, I will continue watching.  Unless she doesn’t let up on saying “Stop” like she doesn’t believe what the guys say, ever. It’s really annoying!
If you’ve been watching at all, I completely agree with Eric and what he was saying. I’m so sad she blew up on him like that and it all ended that way.  What a bummer.  I can’t imagine how horrible she feels knowing the entire world saw the way she treated him during their last meeting.  Can’t feel good!

Game of Thrones is almost over for the season and what a season it was.   There were definitely a lot of shocking moments!

The final season of True Blood starts in a few weeks and I am really excited for that.  I hope they end it well!
What books and TV shows are you loving right now?!?

REVEAL….

And now, without further ado…..

Our Save the Dates from Wedding Paper Divas!

We went with the Effervescent Sparkle design, which I adore.  I had them change the paper to white and I don’t think I could love them anymore that I already do!

(Also, lets pretend you don't see his name. I mean, who are we kidding with "C")

What do you think??
